COLOMBO, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka on Tuesday launched the first phase of its Dream Destination project, a national program to renovate 100 railway stations across the country, the President's Media Division (PMD) said.
The initiative was inaugurated at the Talpe Railway Station in the southern province, which is also a popular tourist destination known for its beaches.
The project, a joint effort of the government, private sector, and the public, seeks to rebrand Sri Lanka's railway stations with a modern identity that meets international standards, the PMD said.
The Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation, in partnership with the Clean Sri Lanka program and private sector contributions, will oversee the drive.
Sri Lanka's rail network, built mainly during the colonial era, remains a popular mode of travel for both locals and foreign visitors.
Announced in June, the Dream Destination project aims to create a clean, safe, and attractive railway station network that ensures the comfort of all passengers, including those with special needs. ■
