DHAKA, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh's leading telecom operator Grameenphone has cemented its reputation as the country's largest cellphone operator in terms of users by welcoming its 10 millionth 4G registered customer.

Within 14 months of introducing 4G, using largely leading Chinese global telecom vendor Huawei's equipment, Grameenphone has become the first operator in Bangladesh to cross the 10 million customer mark of the fourth generation of mobile telecommunications services.

Since the launch of 4G in February 2018, Grameenphone crossed the threshold of 5 million 4G customers in November 2018 and the latter five million joined within only five months, said the operator in a statement on Monday.

Denoting this milestone, senior Grameenphone official Yasir Azman said, "Bangladesh is one of the fastest growing 4G market in Asia."

This shows how fast the country is moving towards digitalisation through mobile broadband and creating the opportunities to unleash potentials, he said.

Grameenphone has been continuing to expand its 4G coverage across the country and most recently became one of the first telecom operators in South Asia and the first operator in Bangladesh to introduce the NB-IoT network, it said.

Grameenphone, 55.8 percent owned by Norwegian telecom company Telenor and 34.2 percent owned by local Grameen Telecom, has a strong legacy of providing mobile services to all parts of the country.
